* Time Requirements

  • These minimum time requirements are expressed in whole months, during which there must be regular commitment. Regular time commitment is defined as at least one (1) hour per week, two (2) hours per fortnight or a four (4) hours per four weeks.
  • Participants are encouraged to continue their activities beyond the minimum time requirements.
  • If a Participant is required to take a break (e.g. school holidays or exams) they may still count their previous activities toward their Award. Breaks are fine so long as the Participant shows regular commitment over the specified whole number of months required for the Award level they have chosen.
  • The minimum length of time for undertaking Award activities are a condition of the Award – it is not possible to achieve an Award in a shorter time span by working more intensely.

** Adventurous Journey: Satisfactory completion

  • Undertake preparation and training which is relevant to their planned journey and skill level. Note: Sufficient preparation and training is required at each level of the Award to ensure all journeys are safe
  • At least one practice journey of a similar nature, difficulty and duration using the same mode of travel as the qualifying journey at each level of the Award.
  • Please see section 6 in The Australian Award Handbook on the Adventurous Journey for more detail.

*** Further Requirements

  • At Bronze level, if a person is aged 13 but part of a year/peer group where the majority are 14 years or older, that young person can start their Bronze Award with the rest of the group on the approval of the Award Leader.
  • If the Participant is a direct entrant to Silver, they must be 15 years old to start the Award. A person may commence Silver at 14 and 9 months or above if they have completed their Bronze Award.
  • Participants who commence their Bronze or Silver Award level slightly earlier will need to wait until they meet the minimum age for completion before they can submit for their Award.
  • Activity time undertaken prior to being accepted as a Participant by the Award Leader, cannot be included in the minimum participation time requirements. At each level of engagement, the Award demands progressively more time, commitment and responsibility from the Participant.
  • Whilst the Award may be offered within school, university, work time, custody or extracurricular activity, individuals choose to do a program and must commit a substantial amount of their free time to undertake their activities.
  • No activity undertaken before a Participant’s 16th birthday may be counted towards a Gold Award
